THE STEWARD · PLAN A LITTLE WINTER PLANTING

Choose the place before the tree.

A practical route from a West Georgia planting idea to Georgia Forestry Commission seedlings and an arranged pickup.

A few suitable trees can begin a longer project. GFC sells seedlings to the public in small and large quantities for purposes including woodland renewal, wildlife habitat and beautification. The best first choice is a tree suited to the ground and the space it will need.

Write down what you want the trees to do.

Shade, wildlife food, a woodland planting and a screen can call for different species and spacing. Check sunlight, soil, drainage, competing vegetation and mature room before ordering. A species that suits a dry slope may be a poor choice for a wet corner.

Use the GFC county directory to discuss a woodland plan. Haralson’s office number is 770-646-5501. For a small yard planting, your county Extension office is another starting point.

Order with the pickup plan in mind.

  1. Start with the GFC seedling information, then the official GaSeedlings.org store.
  2. Choose the species and quantity after checking the current listing. Check each product’s minimum quantity and permitted order increments with GFC.
  3. Select a GFC county unit for receipt, or arrange nursery pickup. GFC says delivery to its offices has no additional charge. The order’s shipping address is for records; it does not establish home delivery.
  4. Confirm the receiving office, available date, final amount and pickup instructions before completing the order.

Nursery questions: 478-508-0056, Flint River Nursery, 9850 River Road, Byromville, Georgia. A visit to the nursery should be arranged, rather than assumed from an online order.

Two small-order examples

These catalog figures were observed October 15, 2026. They are examples of product subtotals, not a stock reservation or a final checkout quote.

Select Piedmont3 Loblolly

50 seedlings × $0.60 = $30. This was the smallest displayed tier for product NUR70. Its description recommends the selection north of Georgia’s Fall Line.

Check current pine quantity and price

Northern Red Oak

10 seedlings × $4 = $40. This was a displayed tier for product NUR11. The listing describes deep, well-drained loams as a suitable setting.

Check current oak quantity and price

Confirm applicable tax, permitted order increments, availability and receipt arrangements through GFC. A low per-tree figure at a much larger quantity does not establish the small-order price. Species can sell out.

Have the ground ready before pickup.

GFC’s 2026 announcement describes the 2026–27 winter season; its general guidance recommends planting from December through March 1. Confirm the delivery week and species-specific timing. The office delivery program begins in December, with dates subject to change.

Keep roots from drying and protect seedlings from sun, wind and heat. Follow the species-specific storage and planting-depth instructions. GFC’s care sheet says seedlings held at 50–70°F should be planted within one or two days; do not plan to leave a bundle in a warm vehicle while the site is prepared.

A bare-root seedling needs care after planting and time to grow. Ask about vegetation competition, watering and survival checks for your site; the purchase alone does not promise an established screen or a particular survival rate.

Read GFC’s care sheet before collection. Keep it with the order details so whoever plants the trees has the instructions.

Keep exploring close to home.
