Why does my fire pit smoke so much?

Check wood moisture, piece size, airflow and the fire-pit instructions before buying more equipment.

Check the wood before changing the pit.

Damp wood can keep a fire from burning well. EPA’s archived guidance recommends wood below 20% moisture for best burning. Split a few representative pieces and test the fresh interior with a wood moisture meter, following the meter’s instructions. A dry-looking outside is not enough to establish the condition inside. [1] [2]

A “seasoned” label is a useful question to discuss with the seller, not an individual test result. If a delivery performs poorly, photograph the wood and share the conditions and any meter readings with the seller so the problem can be understood fairly.

Give the fire the space its design requires.

Check the maker’s instructions for the allowed fuel, log dimensions, loading height and cleaning. Oversized pieces or a crowded firebox can interfere with airflow. For smokeless pits, the maker’s loading limit and vent clearance matter. Allow the unit to cool fully before removing ash or investigating blocked passages. [3]

Use small, dry starting material and an approved starter, then build the fire as directed. Do not use gasoline or burn painted, treated or glued wood, rubbish or mouldy wood. [1]

“Smokeless” still needs good fuel and operation.

Breeo explains that its smoke-reducing design depends on a properly built, hot fire and does not promise zero smoke under every condition. Startup and poorly burning wood can still produce smoke. Read the guidance for your own model rather than assuming every pit works the same way. [3]

If smoke keeps drifting toward guests or a neighbor’s open window, pause the evening and choose another time. Do not move a hot or burning pit. A pleasant evening should leave room for the comfort of the people around you.

What to tell Daniel when you ask for wood.

Send the pit model, the longest log it accepts, and whether you plan to cook. Say if you need wood for a particular date, and ask about the current supply’s condition. We will confirm the available wood and piece sizes before you agree.

Need a dry place to keep the next delivery? Plan the storage before the wood arrives.
