Find your model number and the right manual

Before ordering a belt or filter, identify the machine you actually own. A few clear numbers and the correct manual make every later job easier.

1. Keep the different labels separate

Start with the maker's label-location guide. Follow the machine's shutdown instructions before approaching it; do not remove guards or reach near hot or moving parts just to get a photograph.
Write down the machine brand, full model or product number, and serial number. Then record the engine maker and engine identification separately. A mower's engine can have a different manufacturer and numbering system.
For an attachment such as a mower deck, record the installed attachment's label too. If parts have been replaced, tell the dealer; the original machine description may not describe everything now fitted.
Take a readable close-up and a wider photo showing which label it is. Copy letters, zeros, dashes, and suffixes carefully. Keep serial numbers in your private record rather than a public post.

2. Match the manual before following its instructions

Open the manufacturer's manual finder below. Enter the complete model and any requested serial or engine-type information. Check the cover and applicability notes against your own labels.
Keep the operator's manual for use and maintenance. Use the illustrated parts catalog to identify components and part numbers. Keep engine and attachment instructions alongside the machine manual when they are separate.
Save the matching manual or its link, publication number, and relevant page in your equipment notes. If two manuals or serial ranges seem possible, have the manufacturer or dealer resolve the match before choosing parts or service instructions.

3. Take an exact number to the supplier

Find the correct system in the official parts diagram: engine oil filter, deck belt, and ground-drive belt are different searches. Confirm the installed configuration and any serial-range note.
Write down the manufacturer part number and where you checked it. Ask the dealer about a replacement or superseded number if the catalog is unclear. Do not treat a similar-looking part as a confirmed match.

Is the name on the hood enough?

Use it as a starting point, then find the full identification label. Keep the engine and attachment details with it before selecting parts.

What if the label is unreadable?

Keep the readable characters, clear photographs, and any purchase or service records. Ask the manufacturer or dealer to identify it. Leave uncertain characters unconfirmed instead of filling them in from appearance.
