Read the class label.
For Georgia to treat a machine as an electric-assisted bicycle, the current definition includes two or three wheels, working pedals, and a motor rated at no more than 750 watts. Class 1 assists while pedaling to 20 mph; Class 2 may use a throttle within its 20 mph class limit; Class 3 assists while pedaling to 28 mph.
Newer e-bikes should carry a permanent label showing the class, motor wattage, and top assisted speed. Check that label on the bike instead of relying only on an online headline or a “peak power” claim.
Georgia limits a bicycle to the number of people it is designed and equipped for. Before adding a child seat, passenger pad, rack seat, or trailer, confirm the bike and accessory manufacturers allow that use and that the combined weight stays within every listed limit.
Georgia requires a properly fitted, fastened helmet for riders and passengers under 16. We recommend a correctly fitted helmet for every member of the family. Class 3 riders and passengers must wear one at every age, and operators must be at least 15.
Begin on a quiet, familiar route with slower traffic. Ride in the same direction as traffic, obey signs and signals, look behind you before changing position, and leave more stopping room than you would on a light bicycle. Start new riders on the lowest assist setting.
At night Georgia requires a white front light and a red rear light visible from 300 feet, although an approved rear reflector may satisfy the rear requirement. A bright rear light that responds when you brake is a useful extra signal. Test both brakes before every family ride.
Use the charger supplied or recommended by the manufacturer, follow its instructions, and unplug when charging is complete. Be present while it charges. Do not charge while sleeping or while nobody is home, and stop using a battery or charger that is damaged, swollen, unusually hot, smoking, or giving off an unusual odor.

If anyone is bitten or scratched, get to safety, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water, seek prompt medical advice, and report the incident to local animal control or police.

Save the carton, packing materials, receipt, charger information, keys, serial number, and owner’s manual until the bike is assembled, tested, and clearly staying. A large e-bike can be difficult to return without its original packaging.
For a longer rural ride, carry a charged phone, identification, water, and a compact tire pump. Tell someone the route and expected return time when riding alone.
