Confirm the actual product, loose or compacted basis, moisture, coverage, payload, and pricing with the supplier. Extra allowance covers measurement uncertainty, uneven grade, and incidental loss; it is not a universal compaction factor. If you require a finished compacted depth, obtain a product-specific conversion before ordering.

Quantity is volume × density.

Length × width × depth produces volume. Cubic yards become estimated tons only after applying a material-density assumption supplied or confirmed by the seller.

Water decides whether repairs last.

Federal Highway Administration guidance for unpaved roads explains that inadequate crown can allow ponding, soften material, and lead to potholes. Residential drives still require individual judgment.

A calculator cannot inspect a base.

Soil, subgrade, existing stone, traffic, slope, runoff, culverts, and outlets can change what should be placed and how the driveway should be shaped.

How does the gravel calculator work?

It adds the area of each non-overlapping rectangular section, multiplies that area by the shared planning depth, converts cubic feet to cubic yards, adds your editable extra-order allowance, and then multiplies by the active supplier conversion in US short tons per loose cubic yard. Calculate different depths or material layers separately.

Why is the tonnage shown as a range?

Aggregate type, gradation, moisture, supplier measurement, actual placed depth, and field compaction vary. The center estimate uses the supplier conversion you entered. The displayed range is a simple ±10% planning band around that result; it is not a product specification or supplier guarantee.

Will adding gravel repair recurring potholes?

Sometimes a surface refresh is appropriate. But if water ponds, enters from uphill, washes along the drive, or softens the base, more gravel may only cover the symptom temporarily. Drainage and surface shape should be checked first.

What depth should I choose?

The tool intentionally does not prescribe one universal depth. A surface refresh, pothole repair, reconstruction, and a new driveway have different needs. Existing base, soil, traffic, slope, drainage, and whether the depth is loose or compacted should determine the section.

Should I use crusher run or clean stone?

They serve different purposes. Crusher run contains fines that can compact into a dense surface or base. Clean stone drains differently and does not bind the same way. Confirm the intended layer and supplier specification before ordering.

Does this calculator size culverts or drainage systems?

No. It does not size pipe, culverts, French drains, retaining structures, or stormwater systems. Those decisions require site conditions and, when appropriate, qualified engineering or permitting review.

Confirm with the supplier

Ask for the actual product name, whether its conversion is loose or compacted, moisture or coverage guidance, net material payload, delivery limits, and a safe dumping location.

Contact Georgia 811 before excavation

If work will involve mechanized excavation or grading below the existing surface, Georgia 811 directs people to submit a locate request at least three business days before the planned start, wait for markings, and check every utility response. Marks are approximate, and private lines may require a private locator.
