Pack the life-preserving items first.
Begin with properly fitted life jackets, a suitable boat and paddle, drinking water, essential medicine, communication, identification and a float plan. Convenience gear cannot make up for a missing essential.
Protect the items that get everyone home.
Place the vehicle keys and each phone in separate waterproof closures rather than trusting one bag. Keep the takeout keys with the paddling group and secure closures where they cannot float away unnoticed.
Choose food that survives the day.
Whole fruit, peanut-butter crackers, trail mix, jerky and sturdy bars are simpler than a meal that depends on cooking. Carry enough water for the expected time plus delay, and use an inexpensive small cooler or dry bag that can be secured to the boat.
Add only what your group actually needs.
Children need correctly fitted equipment, dry clothing and closer supervision. Fishing adds licenses, limits, tools and line control. Sun, insects, rain and cooler weather each change the list. The free builder keeps these additions separate.
Pack the takeout, not just the launch.
Leave dry clothes, towels, water and a trash bag in the takeout vehicle. Bring wipes and an appropriate waste system where facilities are uncertain. Carry out every wipe, wrapper, line clipping and food scrap.
Staying overnight? Set up drinking water first.
Fill your containers from a known drinking-water supply. At camp, a water jug with a tap lets the group refill bottles without lifting the whole container each time. Set it on a stable surface and check the cap and tap for leaks before the trip. Choose a filled weight you can comfortably carry. Use the bottles and containers you already have if they cover your group’s needs.
Keep a light where you can reach it.
A headlamp leaves both hands free when you fasten a rainfly or find something in a dark tent. Test it before leaving and pack the right spare batteries. If the group needs shared light for a meal or a card game, a small camp lantern can sit on the table. Bring one you already own if it does the job, and keep light out of neighboring campsites.
Check the tent before you pack it.
Pitch it at home and look over the floor, rainfly, poles and seams. A little repair tape can patch a small tear in compatible fabric. Match the adhesive to the tent’s material and coating, then follow the repair instructions for cleaning, overlap and curing time. A tape patch does not replace a broken pole. Arrange the place and the campfire wood before leaving.
