Moss & Sons · A little time outside

Keep kids occupied.

Give children a little room, a small challenge and time to follow their own questions.

7 starting ideas

Try a 30–60 minute outing

Try this today

  1. Pick a familiar place where an adult can supervise comfortably.
  2. Offer a choice between two activities: a bike ride or ball game, for example.
  3. Finish while there is still some energy left for getting home and putting things away.

Bring: Water, a snack, suitable shoes and one simple toy or notebook.

Choose an idea

  1. Ride a familiar loop

Start with a short bike ride suited to the youngest rider. Check the bicycles and helmets, choose a suitable route and include a snack stop instead of chasing distance.

  2. Explore a creek from the bank

Watch moving water, look for tracks in the mud or draw the shapes of stones. Use a safe, permitted bank with close adult supervision; this idea does not require wading or crossing.

  3. Play ball

Try catch, a kick-around or aiming at a homemade target in an open area. Use softer equipment and shorter distances when younger children join in.

  4. Go on a bug hunt

Look under fallen leaves or watch insects on flowers. Photograph or sketch what you see. Avoid handling unknown, biting or stinging animals, and leave their shelter as you found it.

  5. Build a low fort

Use a sheet over outdoor chairs or loose materials an adult has checked. Keep it on the ground, clear of roads, water and heavy branches. Take it apart together afterward.

  6. Try a different playground

Check the park listing, take water and watch which equipment suits each child. Allow some free play instead of turning every visit into a planned lesson.

  7. Make a five-find challenge

Look for a round leaf, a bird sound, a rough texture, a shadow and something that moves. Point, sketch or photograph the finds instead of collecting plants or disturbing wildlife.

Make it local. Go a little further.

Have someone in mind for this? Pass the idea along.
