Moss & Sons · A little time outside

Grow or care for something.

Choose one living thing or one small part of the property, then make a plan you can keep up with.

6 starting ideas

Choose one small task for today

Try this today

  1. Walk the area and choose one manageable job.
  2. Check what the plant, animal or place actually needs before buying supplies.
  3. Finish the task, tidy up and record what needs attention next.

Bring: Gloves and the supplies for the task; a notebook for questions and follow-up.

Choose an idea

  1. Start a small garden

Begin with a container or a small bed you can reach and water easily. Notice the sunlight and drainage, then ask Extension about soil testing and planting choices for the season.

  2. Tend the animals

Make a calm round to check water, feed, shelter and fencing. Record changes and questions for your veterinarian. Children can help with a suitable supervised task rather than taking on the whole routine.

  3. Plan a tree planting

Choose the mature size and planting location before the species. Consider utilities, buildings, access and future maintenance; then use the seedling guide and Extension advice to plan the next step.

  4. Improve a little habitat

Observe the plants, cover and food already present. Choose one small improvement, such as learning which native plants suit the site, while retaining useful existing vegetation.

  5. Care for one corner of the property

Tidy a sitting area, clear litter by hand where appropriate or inspect a fence line from a safe position. Finish one useful area instead of starting several large jobs at once.

  6. Keep a growing notebook

Take a photograph from the same spot each week. Note planting, rain, flowering, animal activity and questions. Over time, those small records can help you see what worked.

Make it local. Go a little further.

Have someone in mind for this? Pass the idea along.
