Moss & Sons · A little time outside
Relax and unwind.
Make a little room for fresh air, a quiet seat and an afternoon without much on the schedule.
6 starting ideas
Start with 15–30 minutes
Try this today
- Choose a comfortable spot on your porch, in your yard or at a permitted park sitting area.
- Bring one small pleasure: a warm drink, a chapter or someone to sit beside.
- Leave the next half hour open. You do not need to fill it.
Bring: A comfortable seat, a drink and a book if you want one.
Choose an idea
Sit on the porch
Have your morning drink outside or sit down when the workday ends. Notice the wind, sounds and changes in the light. A chair by the door is enough.
Read outside
Take a familiar book, a library book or a magazine into the shade. Pick a short chapter so getting outside feels easy, even when you only have a few minutes.
Rest in a hammock
Use a properly installed hammock and follow its attachment and weight instructions. Bring a light layer, settle in and let yourself rest. A reclining chair works just as well.
Watch the sunset
Choose a place you can reach and leave safely. Settle in before the light changes, then watch the sky instead of trying to get the perfect photograph.
Enjoy a small fire
Where fires are allowed and conditions permit, keep the gathering simple: a few chairs, a drink and conversation. Check the fire guide before lighting up and fully extinguish the fire before leaving.
Listen without a task
Sit quietly for ten minutes and notice what you can hear: birds, insects, distant traffic or moving leaves. You can enjoy the place without identifying everything in it.
One idea to try
A backyard sunset evening
Pull up a chair, put your phone away and give yourself a little time to watch the day settle. Your porch or backyard can be enough.
Allow: About 30–45 minutes. Bring: A chair or blanket, a drink and bug spray if needed.
- Choose a comfortable spot with a view toward the west, on your own property or somewhere you have permission to be.
- Settle in before sunset. Read a few pages, talk with someone or listen to the evening sounds.
- Leave a little time to put things away and return while you can still see your footing.
Bring the kids along
Let everyone choose a cloud, count the birds they see or listen for three different sounds. Ask, “What was one good thing about today?”
Make it your own
Bring a book or journal for a quiet evening alone. Sit with your spouse and leave both phones inside. Or bring an extra chair and invite a neighbor to join you.
A moment of gratitude Optional Christian reflection
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
Psalm 19 begins with creation declaring God’s glory, then turns to His Word and a prayer for cleansing and acceptable thoughts and speech. “Firmament” here refers to the sky.
As you watch the evening sky, take a moment to thank God for His creation and one particular mercy from your day. If you are together, give each person room to share something they are thankful for.
Make it local. Go a little further.
Choose a place and check its own visitor details.
Use the local weather and travel guide before heading out.
Have someone in mind for this? Pass the idea along.
